As the whole world is now affected by the corona virus and we all get showered with news in the TV, radio or the social media 24 hours a day/ seven days a week I think we all need some minutes to forget all this crazy shi**. Don't get me wrong, I'm really concerned about this and I hope every person I love will stay healthy and we will get through this as soon as possible. But sometimes everyone of us need some minutes rest from all of this. In that time I do some fly tying, where I can turn off my head and only focus on the taper of my streamer. Exactly for this situation this SBS is made for.
This Streamer is a really easy but quite effective fly and you can tie it in every color scheme you can imagine.
Here I will tie a perch pattern, cause I might have a little addiction to them.
If you want to have a more gliding/ jerking action of the fly, just skip the bead. The bead makes the streamer more jiggy, which is quite good at my waters when season starts.
Feel free to tweak this pattern for your needs.
Materials used:
Stinger Hook 2/0
5,5 mm Bead
Buchtail
Polar Flash
Nayat for wing and dubbing
Hackle feathers
Ripple Ice fiber
Eyes
As very first put a bead on the hook and place it into your vice. Then grab the first sparse bunch of Bucktail and tie it in.
On top of the Bucktail, lay down a few strands of polar flash. Bucktail and polar flash, a match made in heaven.
To lengthen the streamer and give it some more movement in the tail, place the Nayat on top and try to distribute it around the hook shank.
Again a few strands of polar flash over the Nayat.
Move your thread forward and add the second bunch of Bucktail. I like the tail part rather sparse, so don't overdo it with the Bucktail.
On top again, you might already guessed it, more polar flash. Don't use to long strands of polar flash, the shorter you keep it, the longer it will stay on your fly when the pike teeth hammer into it.
Move again forward your thread and tie in the third and last bunch of Bucktail. This time you can use more than the two times before.
Again polar flash on top...
...but this time also on the bottom.
As wing take a nice bunch of Nayat where we remove only the very short fibers. Leave some of the fluffy part and tie it in, this will create the shoulders of the streamer.
Now place the feathers on both sites and tie them in.
Now move back the bead and wrap with the thread in front of it. In this way you lock it against the Nayat wing and the dubbing which we will tie in during the next steps.
You can use any dubbing you want, but I like to use Nayat mixed with ripple ice fibers. Depending on the length of your Nayat, cut it in half and let all the fluffy stuff in it. First put a bunch at the underside, then put the second bunch on top of your fly.
Fold both bunches backwards and move your thread in front of it. Now "reverse" tie the dubbing and lock it in place. That was the tying part.
Now give your fly a good brush before adding the eyes. This will remove the lose dubbing fluff and distribute it nicely around the whole head.
Take some eyes in about 10mm and place them with a drop of gel superglue in place.
To really secure the eyes, cover them with UV resin and they will stay much longer at your fly.
After the head is built with the resin, I like to add some color and markings with an waterproof marker. Perch need strips and red fins. Here you go, ready to go on the big pike hunt.
